Recently, we saw a few victories in the “War on Vape” notably in California with the defeat of SB140. As you may know, the bill was essentially killed when the sponsor, Sen. Mark Leno, retracted his support for it. The committee was in favor of amendments, one of which would have not characterized vapor products as tobacco products. The stage was set, the people were in place – supporting and opposing the bill and this on-going fight for SB140 raged on.
When the dust settled, the vapers were victorious! The bill died right then and there and the celebrating had commenced. Many flooded Facebook and Twitter with the glorious news! Pictures were posted, everyone that attended posted their experiences and all of the vapers cheered at the victory! And they lived happily ever after.. vaping to their hearts content in a bright new, hazy world!
OR did they? There was a victory in California, yes SB140 was defeated – but that does not mean the fight is over! SB140 will be back – as most bills are – under a different name or a different number and there are many more bills just like it all over the country. Like a modern day Trojan horse, they will try to sneak unfair regulations in masquerading as something else. Now is the time to open those lines of communication with your legislators, vendors and others. Start educating yourself and others in preparation for the next round of unfair regulations.
While we may have won the battle, the war still rages! We cannot be complacent in our fight! We must remain vigilant, informed and ready to act!
This is a great example of how working together for a common goal can be successful. We must not allow our community to fracture and remain split. It is our responsibility to continue to fight. We must work towards our common goal instead of destroying it from the inside. Take the time to open a dialogue with someone, vaper or not. Take the time to ask questions and get informed. Together, we are an unstoppable force.
If we want our fairy tale ending, skipping hand in hand into the crimson hues of a setting sun followed by clouds of vape; then we need to continue to work and spread the word.
Now is the time for advocacy. Now is the time to help others get involved!
