I am a vape advocate! I was born profoundly deaf. Which makes me a hearing impaired advocate also. So I’ve been a champion and advocate, basically since I could say “I can’t hear you”. However, it was something I heard the other day that spurned this collection of words trip – “You’re not advocating if you aren’t in their faces making your point.”
Advocacy is not something to take lightly or to be quiet about while at the same time not a free license to beat ones chest and rant at the public at large.
I have purple hearing aids (why does this matter? stick with me on this) I have PURPLE hearing aids and still when I point to them and express my inability to understand a random member of public society, the reactions vary from shock to rude. I have learned to advocate for myself and can navigate situations with ease at this point in my life. Our children are a whole different topic. All they see is their mother being shamed for something she can’t control. They get mad and blow up and this is where the point I am leading to comes in. They had to learn not to blow up and say ugly things! Even they know at 15 & 13 that saying something to the nature of “googling “hard of hearing rights” and “ADA act” will help you become more informed” and moving on is better than blowing up.
Touché to you if you are on the, but vaping and deafness are two different things stop on this trip. Yes, they are until you hit advocacy. They are exactly the same when someone gets loud and abusive advocating for their topic. Would it be any less rude of me to be belligerent in meetings or discussions to get music levels lowered in a restaurant because I can’t hear the company at my table than it is to be belligerent wanting to vape in that restaurant? It would be rude of me to do so either way however, I can advocate for either without sounding like one of our children when they were little and blew up because someone was being mean to momma.
Advocate! Advocate away, just please remember the lessons from others, that fit throwing only looks like fit throwing.
